The graphic design industry has experienced remarkable growth, with nearly half a million businesses now operating globally—an impressive 11.4% increase since 2020.

As the number of graphic design businesses continues to rise, so does the competition among designers “fighting” for clients and opportunities.
That is why in an increasingly competitive market like this, standing out is essential.

One of the most effective ways to differentiate yourself and stand out amongst your peers is by showcasing a stunning design portfolio that highlights your unique talents and previous work.

To help you do that, we will showcase some beautiful examples of graphic design portfolios that will be an inspirational resource for you on your journey to shaping how your design portfolio will look like!

What is a graphic design portfolio?

A graphic design portfolio displays a selected collection of a designer's best work, showcasing the designer’s skills, creativity, and adaptability in various design projects.

This portfolio can be presented in many forms, including as a PDF portfolio, or physical portfolio, but the most frequent application is a website with the designer’s or agency's name where users can interact and view the projects of that individual or company in more detail.

Thus, a designer’s graphic portfolio serves as a visual resume that highlights the designer's/company's ability to solve problems, create compelling visuals, and communicate effectively through design.

What should a graphic design portfolio look like?

While portfolios in general have common ‘requirements’ across different professions, here are some of the key elements that can make graphic design portfolios stand out:

1. Bio: A brief introduction about yourself, your background, and your design philosophy.

2. Work Samples: Logos, Print Designs, Digital Designs, Illustrations, Packaging,  Motion Graphics, etc.

3. Project Descriptions: Provide context and details for each project, explaining your role and the objectives.

4. Case studies: In-depth analyses of selected projects, highlighting the process, challenges, and solutions.

5. Contact information: Ensure easy access to your contact details so potential clients can reach you easily.

6. Personal Projects: You might include passion projects that demonstrate your creativity and skills beyond client work.

7. Technical Skills: List the software and tools you are proficient in to show your technical capabilities.

8. Testimonials: Include positive feedback from clients or colleagues to build credibility and trust.

How to create a graphic design portfolio?

Like with other websites, there are two main options for creating a new site on the web — code or no code.

Since this blog isn't focused on this topic, we won't expand into explanation but we'll get straight to the point and say that: if you want to build a portfolio website, we believe the best way to do that is through low-code/no-code website builders – the likes of Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, and similar platforms.

Once you've chosen a website builder (we recommend Webflow for its extensive customization options), you can decide whether to create your own web design from scratch or opt for the convenience of ready-made templates — which still you can customize and shape to your liking by changing the colors, typography, or else to suit your needs.

For Portfolio templates, we recommend checking our resourceful list of personal portfolio websites to find one that aligns with your style and requirements.

As for the how-to-guide of creating a graphic design portfolio in Webflow through a ready-made template, here are the steps you need to take:

1. Find your perfect template

  • Head over to the Webflow Template Marketplace.
  • Use the filters to narrow down your search based on category, price (free or premium), and popularity.
  • Take your time browsing - a good template will have a layout and design that suits your website's purpose.

2. Test the template (optional but recommended)

  • When you find an interesting template, click "Preview in Designer" to open it without purchasing.
  • This lets you explore the template's structure, pages, and components in the Webflow Designer interface.

3. Acquire the template

Once you've chosen your template, there are two options:

  • Free Templates: Click "Use for Free" to create a new site based on the template. You'll be prompted to name your site and choose any additional settings.
  • Premium Templates: Purchase the template through the marketplace. Follow the prompts to complete the purchase and access the template.

4. Customize the template

Webflow Designer lets you visually edit the pre-built template. You can:

  • Replace placeholder text and images with your own content.
  • Edit fonts, colors, and styles to match your brand identity.
  • Add or remove sections and elements to customize the layout.
  • Webflow University has great tutorials to help you navigate the Designer.

5. Manage content (optional - CMS)

  • Some templates include Webflow's CMS (Content Management System) for dynamic content like blog posts or product listings.
  • If your template uses a CMS, Webflow allows you to edit and manage that content separately from the design.

6. Make your site responsive (important)

  • Webflow allows you to optimize your site for different screen sizes (desktop, tablet, mobile).
  • This ensures your website looks good and functions properly on all devices.

7. Preview and publish

  • Webflow lets you preview your site on desktop, tablet, and mobile before publishing.
  • Once you're happy, click "Publish" to make your website live. Webflow also offers various hosting options - choose the one that suits your needs.
